NHS long-term plan to focus on respiratory health
The new 10 year plan for the NHS, released earlier this year, has selected respiratory care as one of its national priorities.
Focusing on the likes of cancer, mental health, learning disabilities and digital enabled care alongside respiratory matters, this year’s plan marks the first occasion respiratory health has been in the spotlight and will allow for targeted investing in vital respiratory areas. Areas such as improved treatment, improved hazard perception, early diagnosis and better rehabilitation services.
Respiratory disease is the UK’s third largest killer, with an estimated 1 in 5 people living with some kind of lung disease. Furthermore, around £10 billion a year is currently being spent on care and treatment for lung health.
Despite such a large spend, and respiratory matters effecting so many people, there has been little progress in respiratory health matters in the UK over the last 10 years.
This renewed focus on respiratory conditions hopes to change this.
“Over the next ten years we will be targeting investment in improved treatment and support for those with respiratory disease, with an ambition to transform our outcomes to equal, or better, our international counterparts.”
Informed by leading experts and the latest research, the plan also highlights the inequality of respiratory diseases in disadvantaged communities. The long term plan responds to this by promising to provide targeted support to areas of society that need it the most, through funding more work on smoking cessation, obesity, alcohol consumption and air pollution prevention.
